New Mexico native Philip Berry was named coach of the Texas Tech Rodeo Team in July. Berry hopes to build on an already successful program with the women bringing home the national collegiate title last year.
Berry was the rodeo coach at New Mexico Junior College for 11 years. Previously, he spent 20 years competing in rodeo from collegiate rodeos to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
Berry said he has always had his eyes set on coaching at Tech.
"My dream job was to come to Texas Tech, and I finally got that chance," Berry said.
He said the maturity level at Tech is impressive, and he looks forward to working with these higher level students.
"Texas Tech is a great agriculture school," he said. "We have a lot of students come here just for the agriculture program."
Berry said the goal this year is to get back to the main stage.
"We have big expectations, we have a large team and new members," Berry said. "We are trying to get back to the college finals."
