Latino Americans: Raiders Rojos

The annual spring Hispanic Graduation Convocation recognized Hispanic graduates from Texas Tech on May 16 at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. The Raider Rojos National Alumni Chapter hosts the event. The chapter promotes retention and graduation attainment of Hispanic students, and hosts events to raise money for scholarships.

Faculty and staff, students, family, and special guests were welcomed in the alumni center by the Tech Mariachi band, Los Matadores. Graduates were presented with a cultural stole and a Raiders Rojos pin during the recognition.

Every year the chapter recognizes the distinguished alum and alumni family. This year Jorge Iber, Ph.D., accepted the award on behalf of the Cavazos family. Dr. Lauro Cavazos served as the 10th President of Texas Tech University. He was the first alumnus and first Hispanic to achieve that honor.

Starting September 17th at 8pm KTTZ-TV will broadcast "Latino Americans." It is the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape North America over the last 500-plus years and have become, with more than 50 million people, the largest minority group in the U.S.

To complement the national production, KTTZ-TV will produce stories of the Latino experience in Lubbock and West Texas.
