What you need to know for Election Day in Lubbock on Tuesday, November 5

On this election day in Lubbock and across the country, voters are deciding the next president of the United States. Former president Donald Trump is running against sitting vice president Kamala Harris. In the U.S. Senate race for the state of Texas, incumbent Republican senator Ted Cruz is in a tight race with Democrat North Texas challenger congressman Colin Allred.

Meanwhile, population growth and public education are top-of-mind for local voters on the South Plains.

Lubbockites will decide the future – and history – of local streets, with a $103 million bond that will build new roads in largely south and western parts of Lubbock, as well as repaving around a mile of the historic bricks on downtown Broadway.

Voters in the Frenship independent school district will have three school-based propositions to decide on. The school board is seeking nearly $200 million in bonds, paying for two new elementary schools and updates for existing buildings, avoiding a budget deficit and contributing to a 5% raise for teachers.

Lubbock Election 2024: discussing early turnout, public education and election anxiety

Under Texas law, voters must present one of the seven acceptable forms of photo ID at the polls when voting in person:

  • Texas Driver License issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
  • Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
  • Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
  • Texas Handgun License issued by DPS
  • United States Military Identification Card containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Citizenship Certificate containing the person’s photograph
  • United States Passport (book or card)

While many Texans will head to the polls today, millions have already cast their ballots. More than 99,000 people checked into polls for early voting in Lubbock County, according to the elections office, a new highest total in-person early voter turnout for Lubbock County. The Lubbock County Elections Office has expected record-breaking turnout in this year’s election.

All day, Citibus will be offering free fare to help get voters to the polls.

Buses will follow their normally scheduled routes during their regular hours between 5:35 a.m and 7:45 p.m.
