The Texas Tech Steel Drum Band and Percussion Ensemble are giving a concert this week at the School of Music. Dr. Lisa Rogers joins this episode of The Front Row to talk more about the concert.
You direct the steel drums is that right?
I do. I actually started the group here when I was a student here at Texas Tech. I left and pursued my doctoral degree and got hired back here at Texas Tech. One of the things that my colleague and cohort, Michael Shin, charged me with was starting a steel drum band program here. So, we started it really in the spring of 1994 and have enjoyed a wonderful time through the years with a lot of students, majors and non-music majors in the groups, and have gotten to travel a lot with the group internationally to Italy and Scotland. We’ve performed at conferences and been to Trinidad, which the steel drum is their national instrument, it was developed there.
For people who are interested in the steel drum, you have a concert coming up on Tuesday evening.
Yes, the concert is Tuesday evening, April 23 in Hemmle Hall here on Texas Tech’s campus. We have a couple of guest artists with us. We have one of the leading steel pan players…
