The annual Lubbock studio tour is this weekend. On today’s Front Row we will take you inside the home of, Carol Howell, one of this year’s participants.

Why don’t you show us around a little bit.

Well we have five different artists, including myself. We have Ron Simons, who does jewelry and he comes with a beautiful display. It’s all handcrafted. He’s an unbelievable technician and artist. He’s just fabulous and does amazing and delicate, and very fine work. He will be here all day, both days, and will show you his work.

What’s next?

We tried to mix all the wall art up. So right here, we have Donna Rose, she does amazing technical work. It’s so fine. It’s just really beautiful work that she does. She does black and white and colored work. We also have my work here, I’m an oil painter. And then we have a textile artist. So, we try to group the wall art, here and there. We also have a guitar maker in the other room…he does beautiful work. A lot of the wood is local…

Tell us more about your work.

I’m an oil painter. I’ve done several different mediums throughout my life. I started with oils when I was in grade school or early junior high. I happened to have a neighbor who had her MFA from Pennsylvania and so she was just two houses over and did beautiful work. So I would go there and she’d set up a still life and teach me about perspective and oil and how to prep a canvas, and then I would babysit for her. I took lessons from her for several years and then I always took whatever classes I could. I ended up getting an undergraduate in art and a master’s in design.
