With the cotton harvest right around the corner, Texas Tech Athletics and the Texas High Plains cotton industry teamed up for the sold-out Celebrate Cotton game against Texas State where Tech had a dominating 33-7 win, but the day was not just about football.

This was the second annual cotton game to celebrate Lubbock's two economic powerhouses - football and cotton. Cotton pickers and small cotton bales were placed outside the stadium on display for family weekend.

"It gives us an opportunity to help those who may not understand just how important cotton is to this area," Mary Jane Buerkle said.

Erica Irlbeck, assistant professor in the college of agricultural communication and education, said in the fall the community it focused on football and harvesting cotton.

Director of Promotions and Fan Engagement Elvis Moya said the administration and Texas Tech football helped support the success of the theme, "Celebrate Cotton."

The Red Raiders beat the Bobcats in dominating fashion 33-7, and improved to No. 20. With their 4-0 record, Tech heads to Lawrence, Kansas this weekend to take on the Jayhawks.
