Lubbock's Citizens Tower was a polling place during the early voting period.

May 2 is Election Day for municipal and school elections in Lubbock County.

Several city and school board positions are on the ballot this year, including Lubbock’s mayor and city council positions in Districts 1, 3, and 5; while voters in Slaton Independent School District will be deciding on two proposed school bonds.

Lubbock County hit a record low for early voters in May municipal elections for the past 20 years. In eight days of early voting, just over 7,800 voters cast ballots.

In 2024 – concurrent with a presidential election year, having more entities with elections, and a City of Lubbock proposition on the ballot – more than 26,000 Lubbock County voters participated in early voting.

The only other time since 2006 that Lubbock County early voting did not breach 10,000 voters was in 2014, with nearly 8,300 voters. The 2014 ballot also saw races for Lubbock City Council Districts 1, 3, and 5 – all of those races were contested, but the incumbent mayoral candidate was unopposed. 2014 also saw races for Frenship, Lubbock-Cooper, and Lubbock ISDs.

2026 early voting began with some complications in Lubbock County, the elections office reported “issues with the ballot marking devices” on the first day. The issues were resolved and voting hours were extended on several days of early voting.

Early voting was also eight days rather than nine this year because of the state-recognized holiday, San Jacinto Day on April 21.

Lubbock ISD was set to have several trustee board positions on the 2026 ballot, but cancelled its portion of the election earlier this year, because none of the races were contested.

Polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters will need to present a photo ID, such as a Texas drivers license, personal ID card, passport, or election identification certificate.
