Lubbock County Republican chair David Bruegel announced his campaign for city council, alongside his wife, Katherine, and daughter, Elise. Dec. 11, 2025.

A competitive race is set for Lubbock’s City Council District 3, as Lubbock County Republican chairman David Bruegel has announced his campaign for the seat.

District 3’s city council representative David Glasheen announced Thursday that he would not be seeking reelection on the local ballot for the city of Lubbock in May 2026. Glasheen has been on the city council since 2024, when he ran unopposed for the District 3 seat after Mark McBrayer vacated to run for mayor.

Glasheen endorsed Lubbock realtor David Bruegel, who said he intends to carry on with Glasheen’s goals for the city.

Alongside limiting property taxes and addressing public safety in neighborhood parks, Bruegel emphasized that he wants to highlight issues specific to central Lubbock voters.

“What that looks like is working on the homeless issue, working on the dangerous dogs issue, and continuing to fund street maintenance,” Bruegel said. “I've served twice on the road bond committee, and central Lubbock doesn't have a lot of needs that can be addressed by a road bond. Our issues are more maintenance-based than new construction-based, and central Lubbock has got to have an advocate that can work on those matters.”

Bruegel said his experience as a volunteer firefighter has allowed him to see the needs of many Lubbock-area first responders. Alongside serving as the Lubbock County Republican Chair since 2024, Bruegel has also served as an alderman in Shallowater. He ran for Lubbock County Commissioner in Precinct 2 in 2014, when he lost to Mark Heinrich.

Bruegel will be running against former mayoral candidate Adam Hernandez, who announced his own campaign for City Council’s District 3 seat on December 1.

The last day to register to vote in Lubbock’s May general elections is April 2, 2026, with early voting beginning on April 20.
