This week, citizens can apply for financial help with minor home repairs from the City of Lubbock Community Development. An interactive map is collecting input to make roads safer for drivers across 15 counties outside the City of Lubbock. You can find the map here. And federal law enforcement officers arrested dozens of people in Texas on Sunday as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

A bill has been filed in the Texas Senate that would set aside up to $10,000 in public funds for parents to send their kids to private school. The Texas Newsrooms Blaise Gainey says critics claim that amount isn’t enough to make the program successful. An Odessa economist says President Trump's policy shifts may not have a huge effect on crude oil production. Tomorrow morning at 7 A.M., Lubbock Mayor Mark McBrayer and District 4 councilman Brayden Rose are hosting Coffee with the Mayor at the Market Street at 4205 98th Street.

The Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Jason Sims as Monterey High School's new football coach and athletic coordinator. Two major bills concerning the regulation of THC in Texas have cleared both chambers of the Texas legislature, one to ban THC products and another to expand Texas' compassionate use program for medicinal cannabis. These and other bills are coming as lawmakers prepare to wrap up the current session on Monday, June 2nd.

With the semester ending, both Lubbock and Frenship ISD will provide free meals this summer for children 18 and younger, regardless of enrollment status. Our Bishop Van Buren reports LISD's program will begin on Monday and Frenship's will begin June 2, both run through late July. Despite an original push to for regulation, the Texas House has given initial approval to a complete ban on consumable THC products. It still must pass a final reading in the House before it returns to the Senate.

Yesterday was the last day of the 89th Texas Legislature. A bill was approved by the House and Senate to remove challenged books from public school libraries until a decision is made on if they are appropriate. The Texas Newsroom’s Lucio Vasquez reports on another public education bill which missed a key legislative deadline. The bill would have replaced the STAAR test for public schools. Drivers should be aware of temporary road closures and a large number of emergency personnel around Atkins Middle School during its emergency exercise this morning until noon.

This week, Texas lawmakers passed a bill which would make it easier for landlords and homeowners to evict squatters. Houston Public Media’s Andrew Schneider says the final version, heading to Governor Greg Abbott for approval, strikes a balance between protecting property rights and due process for tenants. Lubbock-Cooper ISD was awarded a $50,000 grant for Excellence in Education.

Lubbock ISD announced yesterday the hiring of a new head coach for the Lubbock High School girls basketball team. President Trump has reneged on billions of dollars for states to improve broadband Internet usage. Texas Public Radio’s Paul Flahive reports Texas would have gained $55 million. The City of Lubbock Water Utilities Department is reminding residents that fats, oils and grease — or FOG — should not be poured down the drain. And along with trash, composting, or reusing, FOG can be recycled at the Southside Citizens Convenience Station on 1631 84th Street.

The Texas House has just over two weeks left to give Senate bills their critical second reading. Following action in the House over the weekend, Houston Public Media’s Andrew Schneider has a roundup of some of the bills poised to make that critical deadline, including property taxes and voter registration. One bill — which passed earlier this session and was signed into law by Governor Abbott — will allow families to use public funds to pay for private school tuition. The program is expected to start in Fall 2026, but the Texas Newsroom’s Blaise Gainey says critics are still fighting to stop it.

The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting a decrease in the number of new measles cases connected to the West Texas outbreak. Our Samantha Larned says the three most affected counties — Gaines, Terry, and Lubbock — saw no new cases from Tuesday to Friday. After winning its first-ever Big 12 Championship on Saturday, Texas Tech's softball team will host the NCAA Tournament Regional Round for the first time in program history.
