The Texas Tech Presidential Lecture and Performance Series is continuing its season with a performance by Gina Chavez. Jo Moore visits with the Front Row to share more information on the event.
For those of us who don’t know who Gina Chavez is, tell us who she is and what she’s about.
One of the things that we’re doing this year, is we’re highlighting two Austin musicians. One will be in the spring, which we’ll talk about later, and Gina Chavez who is a ten-time Austin music award winner. She is a Latina singer, but she bridges the gap. She’s multi-ethnic, she’s bilingual, and her music is, it’s a little bit of vintage pop, it’s a little bit of latin, there’s jazz. She’s very eclectic. But she might start singing in Spanish and then slide right into English and it’s wonderful because you don’t even miss a beat.
Does she bring a band with her? She does bring a wonderful band with her—lots of percussion, as is common with Latin music. You’re going to have guitar, bass, drums, keys, a lot of percussion instruments and we’re super excited about that.
…The first time I ever heard her, which I’ve shared with you, was on a Tiny Desk Concert and as it turns out, whenever it’s on a Tiny Desk Concert on NPR, it’s like this is somebody worth listening to. She was actually, I think, one of the top ten in 2015, so that intrigued me.
