Christopher Nolan's newest film, Dunkirk--based on the true story of the evacuation of the French and British soldiers from the sleepy French town during WWII--is the first original film, with no previous intellectual property, franchise or films, to reach number one at the box office this summer.
It's the most Christopher Nolan film EVER. It has more of the filmmaker's flourishes and habits on display than any other film he has made, playing like one 70-minute scene with a 20-minute epilogue. Nolan fans will not be disappointed. The film incorporates a pulsing score that never stops, human characters that don’t really seem to have much humanity (until they absolutely have to), and beautiful cinematography.
Nolan plays with the expanding or contracting of “film” time better than almost anyone. It's his masterpiece as it comes to playing with time for maximum emotional impact, as three separate stories come together crashing by the end of the movie. Although this historical film is based on actual events, Nolan has a few surprises up his sleeve that you won't find spoiled here!
