The Ranching Heritage Center and KTTZ Kids Club are joining up to explore the world of Texas during the 1860's, TODAY, August 17 from 10-11:15AM!

To RSVP your spot, email julie.hodges@ttu.edu or call 806-834-0083. Space is limited and RSVPs are required!

This activity is appropriate for ages 5 -12!

There will be a bunch of fun family activities including:

Quilt Squares

Throughout history, women and sometimes men have used the art of quilting for many diverse purposes: to keep warm, to decorate their homes, to express their political views, to remember a loved one. Made by hand—often collaboratively—using familiar materials such as scraps of clothing, quilts are personal and communal, aesthetic and functional.  Students will see examples of quilts and quilt patterns from the 1800s and make a paper quilt square to take home.

German Culture and Language

Students and Faculty from the Classical and Modern Languages department at Texas Tech University will teach children about German culture and a bit of German/Texas dialect.

Child’s Work

Life was very different in the "olden days." Most children had a full complement of chores and other responsibilities and quite a lot was expected of the youngsters in a family. Students will use an authentic butter churn to make butter.

Buttons

By the age of 5 children born in the 1800s were learning how to sew.  It was an essential skill as most clothes were hand sewn and/or mended by hand.  One of the first sewing lessons for many was learning to attach a button.  Students will sew two-hole wooden buttons (replicas from the 1800s) onto cards.

History

Ranch Host volunteers with talk about the life of the original inhabitants of Hedwig’s Hill – a historical structure located at the NRHC that was built in the 1860s.  Students will see all the rooms of the structure, learn about it’s architecture, and have an opportunity to ask questions. SCHEDULE
