Nine Athletes head to Eugene, Oregon
Texas Tech qualified nine separate athletes in 12 events to head to Oregon for the 2013 NCAA Championships starting Wednesday.
The Lady Raider track and field team jumped three spots in the national rankings to No.17. Two Lady Raiders, Cierra White and Le’Tristan Pledger qualified for the NCAA meet in multiple events.
The Lady Raiders were ranked in the top 20 throughout the 2013 outdoor season, reaching No. 13. The Red Raider dropped out of the top 25 for the first time in a regular season poll since 2008.
White is the Big 12 100-meter champion, and qualified in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash along with being a leg in both the 4X100 and 4X400 meter relays. Pledger qualified in the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles while in Austin last week.
“I just hope to run a personal record and become an All-American in Oregon,” White said.
Another qualifier is Kole Weldon, he is a sophomore from Jacksboro, Texas. He qualified in the shot put and discus, the first ever athlete in Wes Kittley’s era to qualify in both.
“I had no idea I was the first to qualify in both events during my coaches’ time here,” Weldon said. “I just found that out here at the press conference.”
Unfortunately for Tech, they will be without their ace Bryce Lamb who could not jump at 100 percent in Austin due to a hamstring injury he sustained that Friday. However, the Lady Raiders will need just 10 points to match their best performance at the NCCA meet since 2009.
