DVD Picks 7/19/2012

I'm trying to get things on a regular schedule, I'm still off by a couple days and I apologize! Pretty decent picks this week.

The Three Stooges (2012)
dirs. Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly

When this film was going to star Sean Penn and Benecio Del Toro I was totally thrilled. It slowly devolved into a ridiculous side show, campy, blah blah blah. Might check it now on DVD. Some folks actually claim it's funny.

Product Description:
The Three Stooges (Moe, Larry, Curly) are on a mission. Left on a doorstep of an Orphanage run by nuns, the young Trio grows up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuking and woo-woo-wooing their way into trouble. Now years later, with the Orphanage forced to close its doors, the Three Stooges embark on a wacky mission to save the Orphanage. Hilarious Mischief and Mayhem ensues.

Casa de mi Padre (2012)
dir. Matt Piedmont

I was not impressed by this film after the first five minutes. It's pretty one note and the comedy dies out quickly. Still some hilarious moments and the final shoot out is LOLworthy.

Product Description:
Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando's younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiance, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) and pledges to settle all his father's debts. It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal).

Get the Gringo (2012)
dir. Adrian Grunberg

Mel Gibson being violent and awesome? Yes please!

Product Description:
ACADEMY AWARD Winner Mel Gibson steals the show - and anything else he can get his hands on - in this explosive, nonstop thrill ride packed with equal parts action and attitude! A career criminal (Gibson) pulls off the heist of a lifetime, but his getaway plans go south of the border when a high-speed car chase lands him in a hard-core Mexican prison community known as "El Pueblito." Now, in order to survive, he'll have to fend off corrupt cops, take down ruthless drug lords...and team up with a streetwise ten-year-old who has a few secrets of his own!

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012)
dir. Lasse Hallström

This is a review from twitter: "The title of this movie alone has three things I don't care for. Salmon, fishing, and Yemen." HAHAHAHA!

Product Description:
Ewan McGregor (Beginners) and Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau) star alongside Oscar-nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (I've Loved You So Long) and Amr Waked (Syriana) in this extraordinary, beguiling tale of fly-fishing and political spinning, of unexpected heroism and late-blooming love and of an attempt to prove the impossible, possible. Directed by Oscar-nominee Lasse Hallstr”m (Chocolat) and written by Oscar-winner Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), this feature film is based on Paul Torday's acclaimed novel about a scientist who looks to fulfills a sheikh's dream of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to his homeland in Yemen. It is produced by Paul Webster (The Motorcycle Diaries) and executive produced by Jamie Laurenson, Stephen Garrett, Paula Jalfon, Zygi Kamasa and Guy Avshalom.

Down by Law (The Criterion Collection) (1986)
dir. Jim Jarmusch

If you aren't familiar with Jim Jarmusch's work this is a pretty good film to start with. It's not as empty as "Stranger Than Paradise" and has some great moments.

Product Description:
Director Jim Jarmusch followed up his brilliant breakout Stranger Than Paradise with another, equally beloved portrait of loners and misfits in America. When fate lands three hapless men—an unemployed disc jockey (Short Cuts’ Tom Waits), a small-time pimp (Fishing with John’s John Lurie), and a strong-willed Italian tourist (Life Is Beautiful’s Roberto Benigni)—in a Louisiana prison, a singular adventure begins. Described by Jarmusch as a “neo-Beat noir comedy,” DOWN BY LAW is part nightmare and part fairy tale, featuring sterling performances and crisp black-and-white photography by esteemed cinematographer Robby Müller (Paris, Texas).
