Lubbock-based grocer United Supermarkets will lay off more than 100 positions from the headquarters office in Lubbock, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining notification submitted to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The notice, designed to give protections for workers ahead of closures or layoffs, says United’s “restructuring process” will affect 126 positions and be implemented gradually over the first few months of the new year.

According to reporting on the layoff from the Hearst-owned digital news platform, Chron.com, the news comes as grocers across Texas and the country have struggled this year. The Food Industry Association recently praised President Donald Trump’s order to reduce his tariffs on food and agricultural products that impacted grocery product prices for stores that have operated on narrow margins in recent years.

United Supermarkets currently employs 18,000 people in 54 communities across Texas and New Mexico.

At The United Family, we remain deeply committed to providing our guests and team members with the best experience possible. As part of this commitment, we are making a significant investment in our operating systems to ensure that United Supermarkets, Market Street, Amigos, and Albertsons Market are equipped with the tools and resources needed to improve efficiencies and deliver the best-quality service for our guests.

The system conversion process is expected to start in late January 2026 and be completed by mid-to-late 2026. As a result of these changes, some team members and certain positions will be impacted. To provide clarity and support, we have proactively communicated with those whose roles will be affected, allowing for an extended and thoughtful transition period.

“At The United Family, we are committed to both our guests and our team members. As we invest in new operating systems across the division, we are building a stronger foundation to deliver the highest-quality services for our guests. While this transition will bring changes, we are dedicated to supporting every impacted team member with care, resources, and potential opportunities. Our goal is to ensure that each team member receives the support they need for their next chapter, as we move toward a more efficient and innovative future, “ said Sidney Hopper, The United Family Division President.

Albertson’s LLC acquired The United Family stores in 2013. A $25 billion merger between Albertson’s and Kroger stores failed late last year following multiple legal challenges, including concerns from the Federal Trade Commission that the merger would create a monopoly in the nation’s grocery store industry, leading to further increases in grocery prices for customers.
