DVD Picks for 7/3 & 7/10

Sorry for the delay, here are last weeks and this weeks picks. Because of the holiday week things were hectic and because I took a week off last week I forgot about this week! My apologies! Enjoy,

God Bless America (2011)
dir. Bobcat Goldthwait

A satire directed by none other than "Police Academy's" Bobcat Goldthwait. I will give $100 to anyone who names their child Bobcat.

Product Description:
Frank (Joel Murray) has had enough of the downward spiral of American culture. Divorced, recently fired, and possibly terminally ill, Frank feels he has nothing left to live for. However, instead of taking his own life, he embarks on a killing spree with cohort Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement, and together they embark on a nationwide assault on our country’s dumbest, most irritating celebrities.

No Holds Barred (1989)
dir. Thomas J. Wright

If I recall a 7 year-old me though this was the greatest movie in the history of cinema. I remember thinking it was the apex of human civilization. I still do, actually.

Product Description:
When world wrestling champion RIP THOMAS (Hulk Hogan) refuses to join a competing network, an evil executive creates a new program, "The Battle of the Tough Guys," where rules don't exist and men engage in an all-out brawl for money. After a murdering ex-convict by the name of ZEUS comes out on top as the toughest man, an ultimate title match with RIP is the TV network's best chance for big ratings. But when Rip refuses the challenge and his brother is roughed-up as a consequence, the world champion has no choice but to teach Zeus a lesson in a final No Holds Barred fight to the finish.

The Hunter (2012)
dir. Daniel Nettheim

It could be bad, but I think anything with  Willem Dafoe deserves a rental.

Product Description:
Martin David, a skilled and focused mercenary, is sent into the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for a tiger believed to be extinct. Hired by an anonymous company that wants the tiger's genetic material, Martin arrives in Tasmania posing as a scientist. He proceeds to set up base camp at a broken-down farmhouse, where he stays with a family whose father has gone missing. Usually a loner, Martin becomes increasingly close to the family. However, as his attachment to the family grows, he is led down a path of unforeseen dangers, complicating his deadly mission.

American Reunion (2012)
dir. Hayden Schlossberg

Product Description:
Get ready for "flat-out hilarious, raunchy fun" (Box Office Magazine) as the whole American Pie gang returns to East Great Falls for the first time since their legendary senior year to turn their reunion into the most unforgettable weekend since high school. Old friends will reconnect, old flames will reignite, and everyone will rediscover just how much fun you can pack into one outrageous reunion. Starring Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy, "the gang is back and better than ever!"

Being Flynn (2012)
dir. Paul Weitz

This one came and went under my radar, I remember seeing a preview and thought it looked cliche but promising. Probably worth a rental.

Product Description:
Robert De Niro, Paul Dano and Julianne Moore give powerhouse performances in this compelling exploration of the unbreakable yet fragile bonds between parent and child, written and directed by Paul Weitz (About a Boy). Nick Flynn (Dano) is a young writer seeking to define himself. His father Jonathan (De Niro), however, scrapes through life on his own terms and has not seen his son in 18 years. Taking a job at a homeless shelter, Nick finds purpose in his own life and work until one night Jonathan arrives seeking a bed. To give the two of them a shot at a real future, Nick wrestles with the notion of reaching out to his dad in this "undeniably powerful" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) adaptation of Nick Flynn's award-winning memoir Another Bulls-t Night in Suck City.

Margaret (2011)
dir. Kenneth Lonergan

This film was many years in the making and went through all kinds of trouble getting to the big screen. It didn't make any money but it has a pretty good following and critics seemed to really like it.

Product Description:
From writer/director Kenneth Lonergan comes a stirring drama of rare beauty and shocking gravity. Anna Paquin, Matt Damon and Mark Ruffalo lead a celebrated cast in the story of a Manhattan teenager whose life is profoundly altered after witnessing a terrible accident. Experience an emotional teen's extraordinary journey to set things right as her innocent ideals come crashing against the harsh realities of the adult world.

Adventure Time: The Complete First Season (2010)

If you don't like "Adventure Time" you're a noob!

Product Description:
What time is it? It's time for Adventure Time: The Complete First Season DVD. The Cartoon Network's #1 hit comedy show and Emmy nominated series that centers on the post apocalyptic adventures of Finn, a human boy with a funny hat, and his friend Jake.
