DVD Picks 6/26

Well it looks like it's going to be a great week! Lots of good movies are coming out today! Some I was pleasantly surprised by, some where just destined to be great, and some are classics.

The Artist (2011)
dir. Michel Hazanavicius

A silent film that won a Best Picture Award in 2011. That's impressive, but I feel like the academy really overlooked some other great films in order to offer a program of nostalgic/old Hollywood production values and storytelling. "Drive" was the best picture I saw last year and it wasn't even nominated. Hopefully we can get away from having "themed" award shows and just award good work, doubtful.

Product Description:
Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), it seems the sky's the limit - major movie stardom awaits. The Artist tells the story of their interlinked destinies.

21 Jump Street (2012)
dirs. Phil Lord, Chris Miller

This movie so amazingly surprisingly hilarious. Channing Tatum or Tatum Channing whatever first name goes first, is really hilarious in this. I enjoyed this as much or more than a lot of comedies that have come out in the last 10 years. A good throwback to raunchy buddy comedies!

Product Description:
Former high school foes turned rookie cop partners can't catch a break - until they're assigned to pose as students and bust a drug ring inside their old alma mater. Living like teenagers again, they slip back into their adolescent selves and risk the case - and their friendship - with hysterically disastrous results! Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube star in this outrageously hilarious action-comedy!

Wrath of the Titans (2011)
dir. Jonathan Liebesman

Feel the Wrath! Did the remake of a film that didn't have a sequel need a sequel? Probably not, but that's ok because this one is full of huge effects and giant fist fights from titans! Did I mention wrath? There is some of that as well!

Product Description:
Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson star once again as gods at war in "Wrath of the Titans", under the direction of Johnathan Liebesman. A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kaken, Perseus (Worthington) the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson) is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramrez), switch loyalties and make a deal, with kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.

Bullhead (2011)
dir. Michaël R. Roskam

I haven't seen this one yet but I've been told it's fantastic. In fact, on this month's 24 Frames CEO and Founder of the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Tim League, spoke of his great love of this film so much so that they bought it so they could show it in their theaters. If you missed that make sure and tune in this Thursday at 8:30pm on Channel 5.

Product Description:
In perhaps the year’s most stunning international debut, Michaël R. Roskam’s Bullhead is a harrowing tale of revenge, redemption and fate. Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Mattias Schoenaerts in a ferocious breakout performance), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones following a childhood trauma, initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his horrid past resurfaces, Jacky must confront far-reaching consequences and whether the real meaning of manhood is hormonal or emotional. Acclaimed at festivals worldwide, the award-winning Bullhead is visceral saga bursting with rage that TwitchFilm calls “one of the most original crime films in recent memory.”

The 39 Steps (The Criterion Collection) (1939)
dir. Alfred Hitchcock

Product Description:
The 39 Steps is a heart-racing spy story by Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho), following Richard Hannay (Oscar winner Robert Donat of Goodbye, Mr. Chips), who stumbles into a conspiracy that thrusts him into a hectic chase across the Scottish moors—a chase in which he is both the pursuer and the pursued—as well as into an unexpected romance with the cool Pamela (Madeline Carroll). Adapted from a novel by John Buchan, this classic wrong-man thriller from the Master of Suspense anticipates the director’s most famous works (especially North by Northwest), and remains one of his cleverest and most entertaining films.

Christopher Nolan Director’s Collection

Product Description:
Included are 5 films: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento, and Insomnia. Also includes a 40-page photo book with images from the films, and more.
