The Texas Observer has a long history of publishing quality journalism in our state. That reputation almost came to an end last month.

Staff at The Texas Observer were blindsided in March when a news story revealed the magazine would close and cease publication. Then, an emergency appeal to help staff raised over $300,000 in just a few days. The magazine lives on.

Now, how do they turn that support into sustainability?

Sarah Self-Walbrick is the news director at Texas Tech Public Media, where she leads the news team and focuses on underreported stories in Lubbock. Sarah is a Lubbock native and a three-time graduate of Texas Tech University. She started her career at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
Julia is the Morning Edition Host and a radio producer with Texas Tech Public Media. She graduated with her bachelor's in electronic media and journalism from Texas Tech University, and her master's in mass communication also from Texas Tech University.
