School of Theatre and Dance Presents Dance Tech

The Texas Tech University School of Theatre and Dance is presenting Dance Tech. The new head of dance, Charlotte Boye-Christensen, is on this episode of The Front Row to share more about what we can expect.
 

Tell us a little bit about your background and journey to Texas Tech.

I’m originally from Copenhagen. I trained there from childhood in ballet and then moved to London when I was 17 to go to a conservatory there. I went on to New York City to do my graduate degree.

From there on I’ve just had a really prolific career as a choreographer and as a teacher. I’ve worked all over the world. I’ve been based in New York and Europe and in Asia and Mexico City. So, I’ve kind of got a diversity of experiences.

I came here in 2014 to participate as a resource artist in Wildwind, which is a theatre lab that the school of theatre has every summer. I came here for a week and helped them develop movement ideas for some of the scripts they were working on at the time and met Mark Charney, who’s the director of the school of theatre and dance back then. I was really taken with his vision and ambition for the school. So, when he encourage met to apply for the position, I initially thought I wasn’t really sure because I had only had a week of experiences in Lubbock and I didn’t know much about the school or the dance program at the time, but I was really inspired by what I saw for potential for growth in the program.

So I applied, hence I’m here, and I’ve now been here for a year and a half. It’s been really exciting to push the ideas I have of forging more connections between theatre and dance, but also building some of these tracks I’ve been working on. We’ve got a new BFA track that we’re hoping to implement in the fall of 2020, which is an interdisciplinary dance track that has concentration on performance and choreography…
