The This Sunday First United Methodist Church will host one of England’s best chorale ensembles. Dr. Seung-Won Cho is the guest of this episode of The Front Row to give more details about the performance.
This is the British group called Stile Antico, tell us about them.
Stile Antico, the literal meaning is ancient style. It’s a musical term describing the old style of playing music that was mostly used late Baroque and classical periods…Now this group is using that term because they are exclusively performing those Renaissance music period, 16th to 18th centuries.
Established in 2001, this ensemble specializing in early music prior to 18th century, but this group like other groups have roots in the traditions of Oxford and Cambridge colleges. But what’s unusual is that they don’t have any conductor, just 12 singers. As a chamber they practice and they perform together. They have been praised by critics and audiences immensely.
Their history is not that long and they won the audience prize at 2005 early music network young artists competition. They have been described as one of the brightest and new stars in the firmament of Renaissance vocal ensembles. So they are highly regarded these days.
