DVD Picks 8/21/2012

Last week saw the release of "The Hunger Games" and while this week might not have a film of that caliber it's still nothing to thumb your nose at.

The Dictator (2012)
dir. Larry Charles

Have not seen this yet but a lot of chatter is that it was surprisingly excellent and subdued for a Sacha Baron Cohen film.

Product Description:
The creators and star of Borat bring you the jaw-dropping comedy about what happens when the world?s worst dictator comes to America. Stuck in New York and stripped of his power, Aladeen (Sacha Baron Cohen) is finally forced to live his ultimate nightmare…the American dream. Get ready to laugh ?til it hurts with the uncensored cut, featuring never-before-seen footage, that?s “outrageous and shamefully funny!”

Bernie (2012)
dir. Richard Linklater

Linklater, McConaughey, Black, nuff said.

Product Description:
In the tiny, rural town of Carthage, TX, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was one of the town's most beloved residents. He taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Everyone loved and appreciated Bernie, so it came as no surprise when he befriended Marjorie Nugent, an affluent widow who was as well known for her sour attitude as her fortune. Bernie frequently traveled with Marjorie and even managed her banking affairs. Marjorie quickly became fully dependent on Bernie and his generosity and Bernie struggled to meet her increasing demands. Bernie continued to handle her affairs, and the townspeople went months without seeing Marjorie. The people of Carthage were shocked when it was reported that Marjorie Nugent had been dead for some time, and Bernie Tiede was being charged with the murder.

A Separation (2011)
dir. Asghar Farhadi

2012 Foreign Language Film of the Year. Supposedly this is a really really good film and I look forward to finding out for myself!

Product Description:
Simin wants to leave Iran with her husband Nader and daughter Termeh but when Nader refuses to leave behind his Alzheimer-suffering father, Simin sues for divorce. Her request having failed, Simin goes back to her parents, but Termeh decides to stay with Nader.

One in the Chamber (2012)
dir. William Kaufman

WAIT...WAIT...WAIT... Dolph Lundgren and Cuba Gooding Jr. ? SOLD!

Product Description:
When Killers Collide, Every Bullet Counts: A seasoned assassin plays both sides in a Russian gang war and becomes the target of an unknown enemy.

Big Shots (1987)
dir. Robert Mandel

Can anyone deny how great this movie was? I loved this thing when I was a child!

Product Description:
Ivan Reitman, producer of National Lampoon's Animal House and producer/director of Ghostbusters, brings you Big Shots, a slam-bang comedy-adventure with a heart as big as Chicago. It centers on the unlikely but very special friendship that develops between two 11-year-old boys. Obie is a kid from the lily-white suburbs struggling with the recent death of his father while Scam is a product of the inner city, streetwise but equally alone. Together they share an odyssey full of outrageous humor and riveting excitement that teaches them that it's character and love, not size, age or stature, that truly makes someone a big shot.
Robert Mandel, director of FIX, has given Big Shots a percolating rhythm that maintains a deft balance between the story's scares and surprises and its warm, knowing exploration of two boys on the brink of manhood. With a sterling supporting cast, this is a film the whole family will enjoy.
