Between Earth and Sky: Stories from the Last Frontier

“Between Earth and Sky” is a film about Alaska, and the arctic soils field tour led by Dr. Chien-Lu Ping. The tour is in its 23rd year and has led hundreds of students and professionals through one of the harshest environments on the planet, a 500 mile stretch from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, AK. Through the lens of Alaska we can see how climate change is effecting our entire world, and through the soil science tour we can better understand what these changes mean. We'd like to thank our funding partners: USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation ServiceThe Soil Science Society of AmericaThe University of Alaska-FairbanksThe Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech UniversityTexas Tech Public Media, and Texas Tech University.

Elaine is our DJI Inspire 1 UAV. She's been flying all over Alaska getting beautiful shots.

Our Production Assistant, Weston Davis, uttered these words as we pulled into to Palmer, AK. The truth is none of us have seen mountains like this before. Growing up in New Mexico I’ve been around the mountains my whole life, but when you make your way to Colorado into the Rockies you really see how majestic mountains can really be. However, even Colorado pales in comparison to the breathtaking peaks of Alaska. Pioneer Peak in Palmer AK is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life.

We've literally been between earth and sky all day. Our flight out of Lubbock was late which was ok because we had an hour and a half layover. Unfortunately they couldn't find us a gate, then they couldn't find the right type of loader to move the luggage. We ended up sprinting through DFW Home Alone style before boarding our flight to Phoenix. The gear, more than likely, didn't make it. Hopefully it reaches Anchorage soon, we had quite the layover in AZ so maybe we'll be reunited. Luckily we took the cameras and lenses carry on.

Hey! Glad you found us. This will be your blog to follow along with as we head out to Alaska to film the movie. First and foremost a huge shout out to our Executive Producer David Weindorf. This was his brainchild, he has put so much into this and it just wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for him.
