Writer with West Texas roots connects with father through book

Travel Writer Mary Walker Clark’s new book “Landing in My Present: A Father, a Daughter, and the Singular Himalayan Journey that Reunited Them” chronicles her journey of connecting with her father decades after he died.

Like many men of his generation, Second Lt. Charles Walker, a U.S. Army Air Forces World War II veteran, did not share much about his time at war. He died when Clark was a teenager growing up in Plainview.

After a relatives' chance encounter with a pilot in Lubbock, Clark learned more about her father’s military service. Walker piloted planes with fuel and supplies over the Himalayan mountains in China. The difficult flight path was notoriously called “The Hump.”

After years of research, Clark visited the Asian sites her father would have known. The journey led the daughter to feel closer to her long-passed father than ever before.

“Landing in My Present: A Father, a Daughter, and the Singular Himalayan Journey that Reunited Them” is available through Amazon.
