Canadian Singer-Songwriter Royal Wood Coming To Lubbock This Weekend

The Texas Tech University Presidential Lecture and Performance Series presents the second in its offerings for this year. Royal Wood will be performing Friday night, November 8th at 7pm in the Allen Theater on Texas Tech University campus. There will also be a Q&A earlier in the day at 2:30pm in the Lubbock Room at the Student Union Building. We'll have all the details on today's show!

We are in the office of Dóri Bosnyák, the administrator of the TTU Presidential Lecture and Performance Series. One of the great cultural things we have in our community is the Presidential Lecture and Performance Series, and they just had a very successful event with David Sedaris, and now Royal Wood is going to be here.

"Royal Wood is a Canadian singer-songwriter, and we are really excited to have him because Lubbock has such strong traditions with songwriters. We like to have at least one songwriter in each season because it's important for Lubbock, there's big support here for those kind of artists. His genre is rock and pop, and he has a wide variety of different songs. I've been listening to his albums and he has a handful of albums, he's really young but it's impressive how much work he has already put down on the table. I've been listening to his albums old and new, and I am just astonished by the wide range of music and songs and lyrics that he already has out there. So I encourage any of the listeners to check him out and go online, go on our website or on YouTube, or his website and just listen. He's really expanding beyond pop rock, which I find really interesting."

"He travels as a duo this year, but actually for us he's going to be here as a trio, so we're sort of a special spot for him on his tour. He's on a North American tour with about 30 stops, I'd say. He's going to be in Texas for three shows, he's coming from Dallas, and just for us he's going to have not only a bass player with him, but also a back-up vocalist."

"The show is on Friday November 8th at 7PM and I'm excited to go back to our typical Friday night shows, because David Sedaris was here Wednesday which was unusual, but hopefully didn't throw off too many folks! He's going to be here Friday at the Allen Theater which is our typical venue in the Student Union Building on the TTU campus."

"We are open to having students or folks from the community to come on Friday at 2:30pm, he's going to be here for one hour from 2:30 to 3:30pm in the Lubbock room, which is right next to the Allen theater... He's going to have a Q&A and a little performance. I would encourage anyone who's interested to bring their own instruments because Royal plays so many instruments. He plays the piano, that's sort of his first love and that's how he started out. He also plays the guitar of course, trumpet, ukulele, and probably another - almost a dozen instruments, I don't want to get them wrong! He plays so many of them! So I would encourage especially anyone with a guitar or a ukulele who has their own songs to bring them and play them for Royal because he would love to listen and give any advice or any feedback if that's something that anybody's interested in receiving. So that's sort of what the little class is going to be about and then at 3:30 we're going to end, he'll have a couple of hours to sort of do a sound check and relax and then we're going to have the show at 7pm. He's going to drive in from Dallas straight, he's driving in in the morning and getting into Lubbock at 2:15pm, so straight going into the class but we should be on time and it'll be great!"
