LakeRidge United Methodist Church conductor, Eric Allen, joins this episode of the Front Row to talk about their upcoming performance this Friday night.

What are your responsibilities at LakeRidge United Methodist Church?

I joined the LakeRidge team just over a year ago and right now my primary responsibilities are to coordinate the orchestra that plays on a regular, weekly basis. I help organize special guest musicians, special events. We increase the size of our orchestra and do some special events during the advent and lent seasons. So a lot of that and a variety of things that come with that. Then of course, most recently, the addition of some concerts that will hopefully become a regular part of what we offer here.

This concert series is new. Is that right?

Yes, this is kind of a pilot concert if you will, what we hope will continue as a series. That’s our long-term plan. This is something that when I joined the team, I shared with them that I believe this is something that a church of our size and scope, it should be a part of what we do. I believe we can and should offer this and we’re moving in that direction.

…We decided that we wanted to showcase what the potential was, not just for the church but for the community. We have such a culture of richness here in Lubbock. And there is a population of people that understand that and there might be some that don’t know what the rich, artistic culture that exists here in our modest community—compared to some other larger cities in Texas.

Tell us about the relationship between LakeRidge and the West Texas Children’s Chorus.

The West Texas Children’s Chorus joined the LakeRidge family just about a year ago. Now they rehearse regularly on the LakeRidge property and are part of what we offer there. They’re a private, 5013C organization, but they operate and function within our walls and are part of what we do regularly. So we’re excited about having the families there. It’s something that is open to anyone with children to come and check out.
